Valerie Hudson, beloved wife of Richard Hudson, lost her battle to cancer on March 15, 2017 at the age of 59 years. She was a loving mother to Michelle Tanton and Melissa (Trevor) Muenchrath. The most amazing and caring grandma to Taryn, Zach, Makayla, Hailey, Shyann and Kinsley. She will be missed by family and friends who knew her. Valerie was predeceased by her parents Roy and Shirley, brothers Douglas and Dwain. Echi Kondo, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will lovingly be remembered by her husband Lido; daughters Colleen Kondo and Sharon (Rick) Plante; and two granddaughters Niki Plante (Phil Diep) and Lauren Plante (Brendan Farris). Echi is also survived by brothers Harumi (Michie) Takaguchi, Robert (Judy) Takaguchi; sister Atsu (Jim) Hagihara; and sister-in-law Kaz Takaguchi. She is predeceased by brother Yosh Takaguchi.

PICHÉ, Norman Denis
Norman Denis Piché was born March 30, 1936 in Cadillac, SK and passed away peacefully at home on March 17, 2017 in Strathmore AB. Norm grew up in Gravelbourg, SK where he met and married Aline Nobert on April 22, 1957. Together they moved to Calgary where he founded Dominion Rig Welders. They decided to call Strathmore home officially in 1986. Norm started another welding company upon moving to Strathmore, Target Welding Ltd. He retired from welding in 1998. Norm is survived by his wife Aline Piché, their four children; Marlene vanHaren (Jared and Deanne), Terrie Tarnowski (Tom) (Brandin and Jayden), André Piché (Darlene) (Quentin) and Vincent Piché (Melissa) (Luba and Lexx) and his brother Julien Piché. He enjoyed spending much of his time at the casinos in Calgary where he made many friends. Norm loved farm life, gardening and making conversations, with the girls at the Credit Union mostly. SCHMIDT, Douglas William

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Doug Schmidt on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the age of 58 years.
Doug was born and raised in Strathmore, AB where he worked at the Western Feedlot, Strathmore Seed Cleaning Plant and UFA, until he started long-haul truck driving, which he did for over twenty-five years. Doug kept very active with sports, most notably: baseball, hockey and Tae Kwon Do, until his back injuries no longer allowed him to. Besides sports, he loved to spend his time camping, fishing, singing karaoke and playing pool. Most importantly he loved making memories with his daughters, Sonya and Megan. Doug will be lovingly remembered as an extremely kind man who always tried to make others laugh and put others before himself.
Doug is survived by his daughters, Sonya (Adam) Soch and Megan Schmidt (Jay Lowe); friend and mother of his daughters, Shelly Gardner; siblings, Lauri-Ann (Randy) Lowe, Janice Steinhubl (Rick Piche), Lorne Schmidt and Tammy (Daryl) Hawkins; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Sarah, Rick, Shayna, Christopher, and Jamie; and great-nephew Axton.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Doreen Schmidt; brother Randy Simpson; nephew Kelly Lowe; grandpa Jack Issard; and grandma Rosie Issard, who was very special to Doug.

THIESSON, Nancy Louise (Bell)
Sadly, Nancy passed away at Strathmore Hospital Palliative Care Unit, on March 13, 2017 after a courageous 16 month battle with cancer. She will be missed by all who knew her. Nancy was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who were a part of her life, both past and present. She was full of enthusiasm and had a zest for life. Riding motorcycles, playing golf, skiing and gardening were some of her passions that she lived for. Nancy is survived by her husband Don Hoffman, sons Chris (Jennie) and Andrew (Jen) along with grandchildren, nieces, nephew, and one brother. Freda Newbon passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the age of 96 years.
Freda was born in Calgary, AB, and resided in Bridgeland for a large portion of her life. Freda later met her husband Ray who she was married to for fifty-eight wonderful years. She supported Ray and his construction and carpentry work while raising their son Raymond. Freda enjoyed gardening, crocheting, making things from scratch and will be remembered as being a good cook. She will be greatly missed by all her family and those who knew her.
Freda is survived by her son Raymond and daughter-in-law Paula Newbon of Standard, AB; Grandchildren Ashley Newbon and Matt Archer of Bonnyville, AB, Raelene Newbon and Chris Henshaw of Strathmore, AB, Alaina and Kane Weiwel of Carseland, AB; as well as her great-grandchildren Cole, Sienna, Brayden, Urijah, Skylar and Nixon.
Freda was predeceased by her beloved husband Ray; her sisters Pauline, Anna Marie, Violette; and her brother, Victor.

GILBERT, Rose Lilian
Our Beautiful English Rose Gilbert has happily re-joined her beloved husband Aubrey (Sam). Rose was born in Hamersmith, London England on September 5, 1926 and passed peacefully on March 3, 2017 at the age of 90, with family by her side. She cherished her 3 children: Colin (Sharon) Jeffrey (Brenda) and Janice (Walter Riewe) her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rose & Sam immigrated to Calgary in 1965, and had enjoyed living in Dewinton, Longview, High River, Okanagan Falls and Hines Creek before retiring in Strathmore. All who knew her loved her and spent many hours with her perusing photographs of her family, her gardens and her art work. To the end always a Lady, she will be remembered and missed. Thanks to the Doctors and staff at the Strathmore Hospital, Strathmore Handi-bus, Strathmore FCSS and Strathmore Legion, who made her last years more comfortable. Service and Celebration of Life to be held at Royal Canadian Legion, 230 - 2nd Ave Strathmore on Friday April 7th, 2017 between 12:30 and 3:00 pm. BROWN, Gordon Scott
Gordon Scott Brown was born on January 5, 1937 in Bassano Alberta. Gordon passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Strathmore Hospital on March 2, 2017. Gordon was pre-deceased by his beautiful wife Ellen on February 12, 2012 and numerous brothers and sisters over the years. Gordon is survived by his sons Randy (Jamie), Dale (Jill) and Murray (Daun). His grandchildren Cody, Cole, Kyle, Cameron, Niki and Chad, his great grandchildren Ryleah and Josh, his sister Ester Hood and brother Doug Brown. Gordon worked many jobs over the years in Hussar and surrounding area. His most recent job, we feel, was “Mayor of the Sagewood Agecare Center” in Strathmore. After a brave fight with cancer, we know Gordon is smiling down on us, and he is happy to finally reunite with the love of his life and best friend, Ellen. MACDONALD, Lisa Dawn (nee Hartell)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lisa Dawn Macdonald (Hartell) after a five month battle with cancer. Lisa was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 8, 1970 and passed away on March 1, 2017. Lisa is survived by her three precious sons, Tate (Taylor), Beau, and Slade; parents Bob and Yvonne Hartell of Strathmore; sister Lindy (Bjonna) Fuchs and their children Gunnar and Skylar from Peers, Alberta; brother Wace (Amanda) and their children Keeley and Jack from Empress, Alberta; father and mother-in-law, Alastair and Sharon; brother-in-law Matthew (Kerry) and son Georgie; and sister-in-law Jody (Michael) and daughter Meg, all from New Zealand. Lisa was predeceased by her husband, Hamish in 2007; grandpa Albert Desmet; grandparents Jack and Mag Hartell; and uncles Jackie Hartell and Robert Desmet. Lisa was a free spirit and she loved to dance, jog, and go camping. She married Hamish in 1993 and, shortly after, they moved to The Plains Station in TeAnau, New Zealand. After Hamish’s passing, Lisa and the boys moved back to Strathmore, Alberta. Lisa had many struggles in her life and she battled them hard. In the last two years she was back to her normal, fun-loving self. Unfortunately, her biggest battle with Leukemia was one she just couldn’t defeat, but she did put up a big fight. TILL, Charles James
Charlie passed away peacefully with his family at his side in the Strathmore Hospital on Feb. 27, 2017. Charlie was in his 80th year. He leaves behind his wife Sharon (nee Kearns); his children Lana (Don) Shearer, Jim (Carol) Till, Brenda (Rob) Evans, Michelle (Darren) Hiller, and David (Janey) Till; his sister Shirley (Jess) Chizik; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as his precious fur baby companion Ginger. He was predeceased by his first wife Frances (Spasoff) Till; his parents Jim and Clara; and his brother Tom. Charlie was born in Rosebud, Alberta on May 14, 1937. Charlie and his family moved to the present family farm north of Gleichen when he was 5, where he resided until his passing. Charlie’s golden years were spent at Lake Koocanusa where he enjoyed fishing, watching all the beautiful birds that reside there and visiting with family and friends where his friends became family.
